I think I’m going to try watching the show instead. While I was only really invested in the first two cases, this was still very informative and interesting to see John Douglas’ thoughts about certain cases he’s dealt with. The interrogators were interested in his motivation so they could help put together a coherent case for trial. He really brought the story to life and made me feel like I was listening to MINDHUNTER. The Killer Across the Table is a comprehensive look at how profiling works. I could listen to him narrate audiobooks until the end of time. Was he born with homicidal impulses or were they the result of a dysfunctional upbringing that demanded some form of displaced retaliation or retribution? Every so often a book sends shivers down one’s spine, makes one check the locks of the doors and windows of the house, and hunker down to listen to a book that is both harrowing and frightening all in the knowledge that this was all true. John E. Douglas is one of the most iconic names in crime. How and why did Harvey become the person he was? He was one of the FBI's first criminal profilers and a celebrated serial killer "whisperer" for the duration of his career. Moreover, he perverted one of our most cherished values: the mission to heal and comfort the sick.These may not be the types of criminals that thriller movies are made about.
As it turned out, though, Harvey spoke freely to the FBI agents questioning him.
I expected the 4 broken up parts to be exclusively about the subject he was interviewing for each section. But first, Douglas shows readers how profiling came to be, how they gather information to do what they do, and how it can be used to keep people safe as well as to catch predators still on the loose.
But he was also the inspiration for one of the characters, Jack Crawford, in Silence of the Lambs, which I did see. By the time he was captured and brought to justice, he had proudly embraced the moniker Angel of Death. If you've seen Mindhunter (and I recommend that you do), most of what's discussed here, save the specifics of these 4 cases, has been covered before.
