It was cool, because you can relax by the beach for a few hours.The butterflies are back! We saw a few butterflies but didn’t see any clumped in the trees in January. More than 10 miles of trails and a mile long stretch of blufftop makes this an excellent place for hikers, runners, families and kids.From Santa Barbara drive northbound on Highway 101 to the Glen Annie/Storke Road exit in Goleta. In February, purple and yellow wildflowers burst into bloom all over the bluffs. Ellwood Bluffs/Coronado Butterfly Preserve is a 1.2 mile loop trail located near Goleta, California that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. Once on the trail you pass an info plaque on the insects that live in the area, then quickly disappear into a dense wooded area that is very shaded and beautiful. Really green again!I would recommend this trail for a starting point. I can have wild ravine views, rugged mountains, the ocean and look all over the country between me and Santa Barbara 12 miles distant, the west view being of equal beauty. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and running. Show more Show less. Santa Barbara’s Goleta neighborhood, 12 miles west of the offers stretches of hard-sand beach, scenic mesa trails, and a butterfly preserve where you can witness thousands of Monarchs wintering in the warm sun. The monarch butterflies spend some time here each year during their long migration, and the eucalyptus groves smell amazing. The main plantation was just across from Ellwood Bluffs County Park near Ellwood Union School.Today, as you walk down through the park you will notice the long rows of eucalyptus that line Hollister Avenue and in places separate the open fields from one another. That's also a blessing because you could easily make this into a 5 mile hike if you wanted to since there are so many little different trails that branch off this one in all directions, some deeper into the wooded area, others take you farther along the beach cliffs. I suggest walking down to the beach on a low tide.
