The forest covers most of Grand Mesa and the south part of Battlement Mesa.It has a total area of 346,555 acres (541.49 sq mi, or 1,402.46 km²). Colorado contains 11 National Forests and 2 National Grasslands. The Grand Mesa National Forest is a U.S. National Forest in Mesa, Delta and Garfield Counties in Western Colorado.It borders the White River National Forest to the north and the Gunnison National Forest to the east. The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests are located on the western slope of the Colorado Rockies covering 3,161,912 acres of public land in the central and southern Rocky Mountains. Mostly all of the mesa is wilderness and part of the Grand Mesa National forest.
These three forests combined cover almost 3 million acres of National Forest System land in the central and southern Rocky Mountains, an area that lies south of the Colorado River and west of the Continental Divide with some of the most spectacular scenery in the Rockies.The Forests vary in elevation from 5,800 feet above sea level in Roubideau Creek Canyon to 14,309 feet on Uncompahgre Peak.The Forests include spectacular features like the 355 foot high Bridal Veil falls; the Grand Mesa with over 300 lakes, one of the world's largest flat top mountains; and the Alpine Tunnel, once the highest railroad tunnel in North America.Ever wonder how much our national forest contributes to jobs and incomes of our local communities?
